Berlin Kreuzberg: Veit Bischoff keeps his head above water with a dry-cleaning business and reluctantly looks after his mentally disturbed mother on the side. His dreary everyday life is only brightened up a little by his flirtation with the cashier from the betting shop opposite. In an environment where violence, drugs and crooked deals are the order of the day, Veit dreams of emigrating to Australia.

The film shows the various stages of the Stahlhelm's integration into the NSDAP and the Third Reich.

After the death of their child, the Hradschek couple consoled themselves with gambling and shopping orgies. After the creditor increases the pressure on them, Ursel and Abel decide to kill him.

Abel Hradscheck, the owner of an inn in the Oderbruch country, faces financial ruin. For this state of affairs, Ursula, his wife and former actress, is by no means free of blame. Teen apprentice roofer Jannis Brüggmann caused Seifert's injury by not securing a hammer, had no insurance, moved in with his strict grandfather and was condemned to all Seifert's medical costs plus a monthly wage-substitute, which the knave could never pay off while Thomas lived, effectively preventing any social life. Nils however finds a surprising relevance in the missing letters, bringing the flee market trader into the picture.
